It’s the evening of Feb.14th and while sitting on your couch, remote in hand, the question of the night rests on your shoulders… What movie should I watch?
There are so many good romantic comedies or heartbreaking true love stories you don’t know what to choose. Here are my suggestions to fit a variety of feelings, so you can watch whatever you are in the mood for. Enjoy!
If you want a cute highschool romance that leaves you with a smile on your face you should watch “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.””. This movie, adapted from the book series by Jenny Han, follows shy high school Junior Lara Jean who mostly sticks to herself. Lara Jean likes to express her crushes by writing love letters to all the boys she’s loved. Stored away in an old hat box in her closet, the letters serve only as a reminder of her past crushes with no intent to ever be read by anyone other than herself. Lara Jean thinks the only love she will ever experience is in her imagination. This is until one day she finds the hat box empty and her life is immediately turned upside down. You can find this movie on Netflix.
If you are in the mood for a classic 80s love story with an iconic soundtrack and lots of big hair, opt for “Dirty Dancing.””. Set in the summer of 1963, the award-winning film follows 17-year-old Baby (Jennifer Grey), as she is brought along to a boring resort with her parents. Looking for entertainment in what seems like a dull summer ahead of her, she joins a dance class for the adults at the resort. Baby quickly becomes infatuated with the instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze) as he enlists her to become his dance partner. After her parents disapprove of her new found love, Baby and Johnny are forced to practice in the secret of the night for the big performance at the end of the summer. This movie is available on Amazon Prime and Peacock.
Are you in the mood to cry? Grab a tub of ice cream and some tissues while watching “The Notebook.””. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, this movie is sure to pull at your heartstrings. The Notebook is set during World War ll as a couple from two different worlds spend the summer falling in love but are forbidden to be together. Noah (Gosling) is then shipped off to serve in the war leaving Allie (McAdams) heartbroken as the promises to keep in contact dwindle. When Noah finally returns home after the war, Allie is engaged to another man leaving her with the difficult choice between her first love and her new fiance.
If you have recently gone through a break up and are forced to spend Valentine’s Dday alone, “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” might be the movie for you. Bitterly sweet, this movie questions the meaning of love and sad memories. Jim Carrey plays recently single Joel, a quiet and reserved man who undergoes a memory removing operation to forget about his painful breakup with his first love Clementine, played by Kate Winslet. The movie constantly jumps between different timelines and memories that allow us to understand their tumultuous relationship in a nonlinear way. While undergoing the procedure, and stuck within his mind Joel relives his memories while falling in love with her. He realizes that he may regret getting it done and doesn’t want to forget her. This movie proves that sometimes painful experiences are always tied to joyful moments and that love can be beautiful and bitter at the same time.
Does enemies to lovers interest you? If so, “You’ve Got Mail” might be right up your alley. In the 1998 film, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan play owners of two opposing book stores caught up in a sales rivalry, trying to make the other go out of business. Unknown to each other they start an online relationship talking on a messaging platform without having disclosed their true identities. As they fall in love with the person on the screen their hate for each other in real life grows to a boiling point. Once one of them finds out their true identity with the online relationship blossom or fizzle out?
