Sock market tips

Sophomore Rachel Rosenbloom proudly displays a pair of owl socks her sister gave her for her birthday.

With winter just around the corner almost everyone is wearing socks. Flip flops and Birkenstocks have been booted out. But what criteria should individuals apply to their sock choosing?

Hale students don’t spend much time thinking about it.

Sophomore Rachel Rosenbloom says she spends “maybe thirty seconds” throughout the day in contemplation of which socks to wear. Neither does she take designated time to purchase socks.

“I’m not the kind of person to go sock shopping,” she said. Her socks mostly come from relatives or as a last minute add-on at the checkout counter.

An employee at The Sock Monster in Wallingford, Holly Gummelt, also finds gift-buying relatives to be a large sock-shopper demographic.

“A big seller for gifts are the Blue Q [socks] because of their sassy messages,” said Gummelt. They feature images such as a pair of socks sadly sitting on a step with the words “worst gift ever.”

Not as sassy, but adorable, are the owl socks Rosenbloom’s sister purchased from The Sock Monster for Rosenbloom’s birthday.

Despite being a no-sock shopper herself, Rosenbloom has a lot to say about socks.

From toe socks–“those are weird, man”–to textured socks–“love me some fuzzy socks”–Rosenbloom knows her sock preferences.

Rosenbloom thinks socks “need to have, like, the cute factor.” They also can’t have “too many insane, bright colors.” Her comments are aptly made in a pair of grey crew socks with lace around the tops.

Junior David Lichter feels length is the primary consideration. Boots need to be worn with tall socks or else they chaff.Van-type shoes look good with crew socks, etc. For most shoes, however, Lichter takes a random pair out of his drawer–socks are his last and least concern in the morning.

Socks insulate the foot, absorb the 0.25 or more pints of sweat you foot emits daily, keep shoes from rubbing, and can be a fashion statement.

“The people who can rock the classy, like, knee length socks…I bow down to those people,” Rosenbloom said.

Socks also provide jobs and an economy for people and communities, such as those living in Datang, China where one-third of the world’s socks are manufactured. Hand knitted socks involve enough work that the heel was initially designed to be sewn on last–as it is today–so it could be easily replaced without having to make a whole new pair.

There is utility behind socks; there are livelihoods in their making. Yet for most Hale students, like Rosenbloom or sophomore Elizabeth Chrach, who spends “maybe about a minute a day” thinking about socks, they are ignored. Only later, when complaining about cold toes or blisters during sports practice, or forgetting socks entirely, do students appreciate what good socks can do for them.

“I felt…pretty annoyed…and disappointed with myself,” Chrach said while describing an incident when she forgot socks for basketball and eventually went without.

Whether you like style or comfort or function in your socks–and socks with “a balance of all three are best,” according to Gummelt of The Sock Monster–they are an essential part of a comfortable, warm, blister-less life.

Pay attention to them.
