Let’s get physical

MILLEPhysical Education has always struck a great and unmatched fear into my heart. It encompasses many terrible things: hand-eye coordination, mean ball-wielders, and the smell of many different sweats mingling together as one.
This semester, due to my strategic but very stupid three-year-PE-boycott, I have found myself taking three classes involving the movement of my body. Every day, I enter the locker room with a kind of dread which could be likened to coming into Mr. Windus’ class very, very late.
I spend most of my time in PE avoiding balls, disappointing my frazzled teammates, occasionally trying to run, and regularly taking water breaks to cool down from all of the imaginary physical strain.
Regardless of how much my body is actually being exercised, I am aware that it is probably good to get out of my comfort zone. This is a huge issue for me. I’m all about comfortability. I avoid a lot of things out of fear that I will be bad at them. I hate failing.
I know that’s not a profound statement, everyone does. But I have recently realized the scope of things I’ve missed out on simply because I was too scared to just go for them. My friends, family, and definitely my teachers are well aware of this predicament.
When I was little, I wanted to do everything. I didn’t mind falling or looking bad in front of the cool kids. Now I am more content to sit on my couch drowning in tears, fears, and copious bowls of comfort mac n’ cheese.
Growing up does that to you. You get self-conscious. Sometimes you just have to run around a bit: face disapproving peers, sweat, and side cramps. Who knows, you might have some fun.
There is really no reason not to try something new. You can complain and complain about your lack of skills, but after awhile everyone will stop listening and tell you to get on with it. This is something I have a great deal of experience with.
After many years of trying to weasel my way out of PE, I had to just get down and do it. I do it very badly, I will be the first to admit, but that is okay. I’m trying not to boycott new experiences.
